A Spanish public research organization and a Spanish university have developed a treatment for lymphoblastic lymphoma based on the use of prostaglandin E2. Compared to previous treatments, the use of these compounds is specific for this type of cancer. Pharmaceutical companies are sought for further development under a license agreement.

Details:

Lymphomas are a group of different types of cancers related to lymphatic system. Lymphoblastic lymphoma for example, is a non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and from a histological point of view, is indistinguishable from lymphoblastic leukaemia (they can only be distinguished by the percentage of infiltration in the bone marrow). The treatments for these lymphomas are usually general approaches that cannot distinguish the different types of cancers, although the response to these treatments can be different depending on the type. In this sense, the search of more specific treatments for each type of cancer is of great interest.

The research group has developed a new treatment for lymphoblastic lymphoma based on the use of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). Although PGE2 is generated by Annexin A1 (ANXA1) enzyme (related to the regulation of cell apoptosis and proliferation) and certain studies show that PGE2 can induce apoptosis in certain thymocytes, their expression is reduced in Lymphoblastic lymphoma of immature T-cells and these compounds cannot regulate apoptosis in lymphoblastic leukemia. Despite these previous results, the research group has observed that the direct administration of PGE2 can induce apoptosis in cells related to lymphoblastic lymphoma of T-cells, and in-vitro assays show that are active against immunophenotype CD4+ CD8+ CD3low.
