Summary:

A French entrepreneur is developing an activity related to cigarette butts pollution on coastal areas: sensibilisation campaign, ashtray distribution and butts collecting. Concerning the collecting activity: incineration is the current short-term solution to solve the butts’ issue. They are willing to find alternative & innovative ways for waste butts treatment and upgrading as resource. Recycling companies, laboratories are sought for service agreement.

Details:

Cigarette butts on coastal areas (streets or beaches) terminate mainly in the sea; 1 butt pollutes 300 liters of water, with around 2 500 chemical compounds inside. The filter natural degradation requires several years.

Regarding that issue; an entrepreneur is currently developing an activity on the touristic coastal areas in the south east of France based on three main actions:

- Information campaign on the toxicity of butts regarding the environment for the prevention / reduction of wastes.

- Ashtray distribution in touristic areas

- Collecting of butts on beaches for recycling purposes.

Concerning the collecting action: the first tests of collecting resulted in approximately 15 000 butts per month. The enumeration showed figures such as 3000 butts collected in 3 hours on surface estimated 200 square meters.

The current short-term solution for recycling is incineration. Alternatives are sought taking into account toxicity of the chemical compounds, and possible upgrading / valorization of the waste as resource. The French would supply to the recycling company or the laboratory the collected butts.
